Day One – Dutch State Visit to Portugal

October 11, 2017

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima are paying a state visit to the Portuguese Republic from October 10 to October 12, 2017. The King and Queen are visiting Lisbon, Alverca, Sintra and Cascais. According to Dutch Royal website, the King and Queen are accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation is heading a parallel trade mission to Portugal with representatives of the airport development and aircraft manufacturing industry and the environmental technology and sustainable energy sector. Here’s the trip’s itinerary.

Arrival + Day One

The state visit started with President Rebelo de Sousa receiving the King and Queen at a welcome ceremony at the Monastery of Jerónimos in Belém, Lisbon. The royal couple laid a wreath at the tomb of Portugal’s greatest poet and national hero, Luís de Camões. This was followed by a guided tour of the Monastery of Jerónimos and a meeting with the president in Belém Palace.

The King and Queen then met with Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, President of the Assembly of the Republic. In the afternoon they were received by the mayor of Lisbon, Fernando Medina, after which they traveled by tram to the districts of Mouraria and Intendente, which are among Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhoods.

The first day of the visit ended with a state banquet hosted by President Rebelo de Sousa at the Palace of Ajuda.

Day One Favorite Fashion Statements

Queen Máxima did not disappoint us Royal Watchers. From the large beetle necklace to her wide brim hat, leather gloves to green evening gown framed in emeralds, she was a royal show stopper on Day One. Here are my favorite fashion snippets.
